I'm undertaking the Live Fearless Challenge this September!

In Australia, IBD is becoming more prevalent, more complex, and more severe. It currently affects approximately 1 in 250 people aged 5-40. Almost 85, 000 Australians have Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, with this number projected to increase to 100,000 by 2022.

This year I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. I spent 4 months off work, multiple hospital stays and surgeries to get me back on my feet. Although my journey to remission has only just begun, I am so incredibly grateful for the care I received and continue to receive from my amazing team of nurses and doctors, my family, my friends, and from my work family. My disease was complex and caused significant damage. It came as a surprise, and I felt completely isolated when I received my diagnosis. Let’s face it, it isn’t the most glamorous disease to talk about.

But I have an opportunity to change that. I may only be once voice, but I want to use my voice to share my story and help others through their IBD journey.

To kick start my quest, this month I am doing the Live Fearless Challenge to raise awareness and look for ways I can create positive change for many people like me who are living with IBD.

So what is the Live Fearless Challenge?

Crohn’s & Colitis Australia are the only peak body for people living with IBD. In response to the growing need for our services they’re running the Live Fearless Challenge asking participants to be fearless like people living with IBD and take on the challenge of walking or running 250kms across the month of September.

The challenge aims help raise critical funds for research, advocacy and education programs essential to supporting the growing community of Australians living with IBD.

What is IBD?

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) describes a group of chronic and incurable disease which causes the gastrointestinal tract become inflamed (red and swollen). There are two major types of IBD: Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis affects the large intestine (colon) whereas Crohn’s disease can occur in any part of the gastrointestinal system.

IBD is a very individual disease with symptoms dependent on where the disease is in the gastrointestinal tract and how severe the inflammation is within the affected area. Symptoms of IBD may range from mild to severe, and can cause problems outside the gastrointestinal tract including joint pain, skin conditions, eye inflammation, liver disorders, and thinning of the bones (osteoporosis).

Help me make a difference!

I would be so grateful if you could please help me make a difference and donate to my fundraising page.

All donations over $2 are tax deductible and you'll receive a receipt via email.

Thank you in advance for your support!

What living with Crohn’s Disease has taught me.

January 23 2018. The day my life changed. The day I was left asking, ‘why me’? But not anymore. I am grateful, because without my diagnosis, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

Perspective.

Whilst I don’t wake up each day with a guarantee that today will be better than yesterday, I am more equipped to deal with the challenges that each new day brings. Life is full of experiences, some are more challenging than others, but appreciate every experience, and look to what you can learn and how you can grow...from the good, the bad, and the ugly. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Be comfortable in your own skin, know your purpose and live in congruence to it.

Balance.

#workworkworkworkwork

Life is meant to be enjoyed, and experiences savoured. Live life purposefully off balance and with deliberate intent to what is most important to you. At times, that is work, other times, study or family or friends or travel. Balance to me is finding meaning in everything I do and remaining connected to what it is I want to achieve.

Happiness.

You can’t control everything that will happen in your life, but you have the opportunity to choose how your respond to it. Take the time to stop and reflect, live in the moment, and make conscious decisions about who you are and what you can do to ensure that you experience happiness as a part of each and every day. Don’t take your health or your life for granted, stop and smell the roses (every once and a while) and make sure you take time to appreciate what is most important to you. For me, that is my amazing family, friends, and my fur baby, Ted.

Yes, life can be busy, and stressful, and let’s face it, bloody tough at times, but there is so much beauty and wonder in the world, and opportunity to do more, and be more.

So do me a favour, and do something that makes you happy each and every day.

Day 20: #livefearlesschallenge

175.30km down, 74.70km to go over the last 10 days of the challenge to reach my 250km target.

Thank you to all who have made such generous donations. As much as every dollar counts, for me, this is about raising awareness of IBD, especially Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. IBD s autoimmune diseases are which are often suffered in silence and have lifelong impacts for many IBD warriors.

With just 10 days to go, I'll be encouraging more donations and even more awareness. The more support and awareness that we generate, means we can lift the profile of IBD, fund more research, and possibly, find better treatment options, and one day…maybe one day…a cure.
